Upcoming Steam Endorsement Course and Steam Assessments (Management Level Upgrade) at STAR Center

Steam Assessments (Management Level Upgrade)

STAR Center has added a five-day class January 29 to February 2, 2024 for engineers needing to sign off their Steam Assessments as part of their engineer management level upgrade requirements to First Assistant Engineer. All eligible AMO engineering members and applicants are welcome to submit an application to attend.

Steam Endorsement Course

Seats are also available in STAR Center’s four-week Steam Endorsement Course, scheduled to start January 29. Each student who successfully completes this course will learn the background knowledge to support the tasks, duties, and responsibilities in:

* Managing the operation of steam propulsion plant machinery

* Planning and scheduling operations

* Operation, surveillance, performance assessment and maintaining safety of steam propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery

* Manage fuel, lubrication and ballast operations

This course cannot be used for recency. Successful completion will satisfy:

* The course requirement of 46 CFR 11.502(b)(4) for adding the Steam endorsement to the level of their current unlimited Motor and/or Gas Turbine endorsement. OR

* Receive 60 days sea service credit towards upgrading an unlimited third assistant (Steam) engineer license to an unlimited second assistant (Steam) engineer license

* The Steam Powered Vessel standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.325(a)(2); Section A-III/2 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 15-14 Ch-1 Tasks 1.2.A, 1.2.B, 1.2.C, 1.2.D, 3.2.A, and 7.1.B

* The Steam Powered Vessel standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.329(a)(3); Section A-III/1 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 17-14 Ch-2 Tasks 1.1.C, 4.1.B, 4.1.C, 4.2.B, 4.3.A, 4.3.D, 4.3.G., 4.3.J., 4.3.K, 4.3.L, 4.3.P., 4.3.Q. and 6.1.C

* The Steam Plants training requirements of 46 CFR 11.329(a)(4)(viii)

This course may be used for only one application towards sea time credit OR a Steam endorsement cross-over and may not be used for subsequent raises-in-grade or cross-over applications.

Students will need to take the Increase in Scope exam for this course at a USCG REC following completion of the course.
