Congratulating U.S. Representative Rick Larsen (D-WA-2) on his receipt of the 2025 Salute to Congress Award from the International Propeller Club are American Maritime Officers National President Willie Barrere and Seafarers International Union Executive Vice President Augie Tellez. During the 41st Frank Courtenay Salute to Congress dinner May 14 in Arlington, Va., Congressman Larsen detailed the contributions of the maritime industry to the economy of Washington State. Rep. Larsen commented: “There’s a lot of work to do. The foundation of that work starts with the Jones Act.” In covering several crucial maritime policy topics, he highlighted the importance of defending the Jones Act from attacks and expressed optimism regarding the nomination of Captain Steve Carmel to lead the Maritime Administration and the strong support for the Jones Act within the administration the nomination represents. He also emphasized the importance of reinvigorating the U.S.-flag fleet operating internationally following its precipitous decline. He discussed encouraging actions from the administration with the recent executive order, and on Capitol Hill with the reintroduction of the SHIPS for America Act, among other legislative developments. Additionally, he addressed the need to continue expansion of investment in port infrastructure, domestic waterways, maritime transportation, and opportunities for U.S. mariners and maritime industry workers.
