United States Maritime Administrator Stephen Carmel visited the MV Cape Island in Long Beach, California in September as a part of a tour of the Port of Long Beach, where MARAD wants to explore the use of nuclear power to provide energy to the area and vessels. MV Cape Island, which is operated by Ocean Duchess Inc., is part of MARAD’s Ready Reserve Force and is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers. AMO members aboard the vessel included Chief Mate William McDonald, Third Mate Isabelle Baker, Chief Engineer Christopher Davis, First Assistant Engineer Jose Deoferio, Second A.E. John Farina, Second A.E. William Plemitscher and Third A.E. Timothy McDaniel.
