In September, American Maritime Officers assisted in the reflag of the MV Montauk, the latest addition to the U.S.-flag fleet owned by Sealift LLC.
Sealift LLC and the union recently arrived at terms for a new-work agreement covering the officers aboard the Montauk, adding jobs for the AMO membership. The ship was accreted into the union’s existing CBA with Sealift.
Formerly the MV Sjard, the Montauk was reflagged in Lithuania and prepared for its maiden voyage under the U.S. flag in Poland, where she was loaded with cargo with AMO members at the helm.
Sealift completed acquisition of the vessel in early September. The Montauk, which was built in 2007, is the third deep-sea vessel added to the AMO-contracted fleet in recent months, building on the trend of new U.S.-flag tonnage consistently being trusted to AMO officers.
AMO members aboard the Montauk during reflag in Lithuania included Captain Stephen Gavini, Chief Mate Tyler Riley, Second Mate Coner Blaine, Third Mate Venise Spears, Chief Engineer Chris Korpela, First Assistant Engineer Benjamin Sturtevant, Second A.E. Michael Alexander and Third A.E. Anthony Perez.
The Montauk becomes the fifth Sealift LLC vessel manned in all licensed positions by AMO. The other ships in the company’s fleet are the MV Captain David I. Lyon, MV Maj. Richard Winters, MV Sagamore and MV Maj. Bernard Fisher.
