Born on November 6, 1959, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Chris vonRabenstein began his maritime career in 1978 through the apprentice program at the Seafarers international Union’s Paul Hall School of Seamanship, class 271B. He hawsepiped his way to Master of Unlimited Tonnage with American Maritime Officers, sailing in a multitude of positions and fleets before later serving as an AMO union representative on the Gulf Coast.
Chris always felt fortunate to spend his life working at sea, a place he loved deeply. Former shipmates said Chris never met a stranger and he was always welcoming to newcomers on his vessels.
A skilled carpenter in his off time, Chris enjoyed building and creating in his garage. He loved exploring the local waterways of St. Augustine, cooking, traveling the world, and spending time with family and friends.
Chris was known for his unwavering loyalty, steadfast friendship, and profound dedication to his family. He will be sorely missed by generations of mariners – and by the sea herself. He died peacefully at his home in St. Augustine on May 28, surrounded by his family.
Chris leaves behind his wife, Carol, and their three children: Danielle, Kellan, and Lee.
Chris vonRabenstein served as AMO Gulf Coast Boarding Representative from 2019 to 2021, primarily visiting vessels calling ports in Florida, Louisiana and Texas.
