The M/V Midnight Sun, crewed in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers, was honored with a Mariner’s Plaque by the United Seamen’s Service during the 54th annual Admiral of the Ocean Sea awards dinner held in New York City on December 1.

The crew of the Midnight Sun was recognized for heroically fighting an electrical fire in the early morning hours in September 2022 in the Port of Tacoma. The Tote Services roll-on, roll-off vessel was staffed with minimal crew at the time, yet the AMO-led crew was able to contain and extinguish the blaze before it could spread to nearby vessels and even before local fire fighter crews could arrive. Accepting the Mariner’s Plaque for the officers and crew was Chief Mate Dan Warren.

George Pasha IV, owner of AMO-contracted company Pasha Hawaii, was also honored at the event with the prestigious AOTOS award for his life-long contributions to the maritime industry. Other recipients of the 2023 AOTOS award included Mark Barker, president of Interlake Steamship Company, and Adam Vokac, president of the Marine Engineers’ Beneficial Association.
