Memorial services set for the late Michael Sacco

Memorial services have been scheduled for Michael Sacco, retired president of the Seafarers International Union, who died on December 28 of natural causes. He was 86.

A visitation service is scheduled for Friday, at Kutis Funeral Home, 5255 Lemay Ferry in St. Louis, Missouri, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 4556 Telegraph Road in St. Louis at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the Sacco family asks that donations be made to the Tony Sacco Memorial Scholarship Fund, Charleston Port and Seafarers Society or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

The backbone of the maritime labor movement, Michael Sacco was SIU president for nearly 35 years before retiring in February 2023. He was also president of the Maritime Trades Department and the longest tenured member of the AFL-CIO executive council.

He is survived by his wife Sophie, daughters Valerie Moore, Angela Baker and Anne Marie Fry; son John Sacco; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and sisters Ida DiCanio and Marie Sacco.
