Beginning in October, RTM STAR Center will alter its small arms program to mesh with a new package of coursework required for AMO members and applicants working aboard Maritime Administration vessels operated by certain AMO-contracted companies.
For 11 consecutive months starting in October, STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla., will offer one 11-day Maritime Administration training program each month, which will cover several areas.
A three-day small arms course will be incorporated into the MARAD training package. Slots in this course will be reserved for AMO members and applicants designated by their employers to complete the MARAD training.
Additionally, STAR Center will offer one open-enrollment small arms course each month. The open-enrollment course will be a modified three-day version of the initial qualification course and will cover the requirements of small arms initial qualification and refresher training.
Until October, STAR Center will continue to provide two open-enrollment small arms courses each month, one five-day initial qualification course and one three-day refresher course.
The maximum class size for the open-enrollment small arms courses is currently six students per class. When the open-enrollment offering is reduced to one course per month in October, the maximum class size will be increased to 16 students. Although the number of open-enrollment courses per month will be reduced, STAR Center will be able to offer 33 percent more small arms training slots as a result.
