American Bureau of Shipping Consulting (ABS Consulting) in June certified the LNG Tankship Liquefied Gases course at RTM STAR Center as meeting all requirements of the Society of International Gas Tanker & Terminal Operators competency standards for LNG shipping for all officer ratings.
STAR Center is the first and only training institution in the U.S. and one of a very small number of organizations in the world to provide LNG training certified to the standards of the Society of International Gas Tanker & Terminal Operators (SIGTTO). STAR Center is the primary training provider for members and applicants of American Maritime Officers.
AMO members who complete the 60-hour Tankship Liquefied Gases course with the SIGTTO LNG addendum at STAR Center will meet all requirements of the SIGTTO "LNG Shipping Suggested Competency Standards--Guidance and Suggested Best Practices for the LNG Industry in the 21st Century, First Edition, November 2005." Officers with SIGTTO-certified training will meet stringent international industry standards, as well as owner, operator and charter requirements in the LNG sector.
"Our accreditation under SIGTTO standards offers AMO officers a unique advantage among U.S. merchant mariners," said Phil Shullo, director of training at STAR Center. "We've been very pro-active in developing and refining the LNG training program at STAR Center. Our attainment of the international benchmark is the result of our dedicated efforts and a reflection of the professionalism and talent of our staff and instructors."
STAR Center has provided AMO members with the LNG Tankship Liquefied Gases course since 1998. This year, STAR Center expanded the program to include a LNG simulation course on the MPRI liquid cargo simulator. Both courses are certified by the U.S. Coast Guard.
The SIGTTO certification process included a gap analysis and in-depth review of all student and instructor training materials by ABS Consulting, followed by a rigorous two-day on-site audit by a team of ABS auditors and LNG experts.
In addition to SIGTTO certification, STAR Center's LNG Tankship Liquefied Gases Course meets the requirements of 46 CFR Part 13 for all Tankerman endorsements, including Person-in-Charge (Liquefied Gases) and Section A-V/1,1-7 and 22-34 of the STCW code.
A division of the American Maritime Officers Safety & Education Plan, STAR Center provides cost-free training and accommodations for AMO members and applicants at training centers in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Toledo, Ohio.
