24-hour Medical Care Provider class required to be eligible for international employment
AMO deck and engineering officers interested in becoming eligible for employment in the international LNG trades must complete all training requirements outlined in the LNG Career Path Guidance document, which was recently provided by RTM STAR Center.

The LNG Career Path Guidance document is available on the AMO Web site at: amo-union.org/newspaper/stcw/lng.htm.

Included in these requirements is the completion of a 24-hour medical care provider course. This and all other basic and additional training requirements contained in the LNG Career Path Guidance document must be met for an AMO officer to be considered for employment by an international vessel owner/operator.

U.S. Coast Guard Policy Letter 9-99 establishes conditions under which U.S. officers who were licensed prior to Feb. 1, 2002, were "grandfathered" or exempted from completing the intermediate level of medical training--which is covered in the 24-hour medical care provider course--in order to obtain an STCW endorsement as an officer in charge of the navigational or engineering watch.

This Coast Guard "grandfathering" clause of STCW Code Section A-VI/4 is not recognized in the international fleet and all officers will need to complete this medical training in order to meet certain flag state requirements.

AMO members and applicants with questions about the training requirements should contact Jerry Pannell, director of member training and officer development at STAR Center, at (800) 942-3220 ext. 7507 or by e-mail at jpannell@star-center.com.
