RTM STAR Center will provide an 11-day training program for American Maritime Officers members and applicants currently employed aboard Ready Reserve Force vessels operated by certain AMO-contracted companies for the Maritime Administration.
Beginning in October, STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla., will provide one 11-day MARAD training program each month for 11 consecutive months.
Slots in the program will be reserved for AMO members and applicants designated by their employers to complete the MARAD training program. The operating companies will coordinate with AMO officers working aboard RRF vessels to schedule attendance of the course during working periods.
The 11-day course will commence on a Monday and conclude on Friday of the following week. The training package includes:
- Military Sealift Command approved small arms initial qualification training (three days)
- Elementary first aid (one day)
- Department of Transportation approved drug-testing (urinalysis) training (one day)
- Breath alcohol test collection training (one day)
- Advanced fire fighting (five days)
The program was developed in conjunction with the AMO-contracted companies based upon training needs identified in their contracts with the Maritime Administration. STAR Center also worked with MARAD personnel on development of the training package to help ensure the program's success.
The training is specifically designed for AMO members currently working aboard RRF vessels. Each course package has a class size of 16. If any spaces remain after companies have nominated students for these classes, those spaces will be opened to AMO members and applicants on a first-come, first-served basis.
