With the expected increase in LNG opportunities for AMO members, the following information is provided to assist members interested in obtaining employment in the LNG sector. The guidance outlined is based upon regulatory requirements and industry standards. Training and processes presented are in the order in which they should be obtained. It is recommended, in order to reduce associated fees, that required USCG endorsements be submitted to the USCG as one package. Information pertaining to company specific requirements beyond those listed will be provided when known. Members interested in obtaining LNG employment must complete the basic and additional requirements first. Basic Requirements
- Tankship Dangerous Liquids (DL)Training -40 hour
- Tankship Liquefied Gas (LG) Course-60 hour
- Valid USCG Endorsement as Tankerman DL and LG Assistant (Deck)/Engineer (Engine)
- GMDSS FCC License (Deck only)
- Current STCW 95 Certificate
Additional Requirements
- Medical Care Provider (Engine) -- 24 hour
- Medical Person in Charge (Deck) -- 40 hour
- Fast Rescue Boat (Company/Vessel Specific) (Deck and Engine)
- Valid USCG/STCW Endorsements for FRB and Medical
Company Specific and Advanced Requirements
- MPRI LNG Simulator Course -- 40 hour
- Company Required/Sponsored Training (i.e. Engine Specific Training, High Voltage, Air Control, IAS, ECDIS, LNG Shiphandling)
Company Selection Process
- Detailed Resume and Updated STAR Training Record
- STCW Regulatory and Operational Knowledge Assessment (Deck and Engine)
- Personality Index Survey-Company-based Profile Tool (as Required)
- Technical Interview by Company Senior Management Personnel- may Require Completion of Specific Employment Application.
Company Commitment following the Selection Process
- Physical Exam
- Drug Test (Tests per Company/Charterer)
- WHO Shot Card (Shots required by Company)
- USCG License and STCW Documentation for Flag State Equivalency Application (To be processed by Company)
- Passport (Should be valid one year prior to the date of expiry)
- Company Familiarization and Orientation
- LNG Firefighting (As required by Company or Charterer)
Employment with LNG Owner/Operator may be one of the following
- Sea Assignment within Fleet- May be initially an LNG or non-LNG assignment and/or below desired permanent rating
- Shipyard Assignment
- Observation Trip (See Guidance Below)
Observation Trip Guidance for the following Officer Profiles:
- Valid USCG Tankerman PIC LG - No additional sea service or loads and discharges required. However, the company may still require observation trips
- Tankerman PIC DL- 45 days onboard LG ship to observe 3 loads and 3 discharges
- Tankerman Engineers LG - No additional sea service or loads and discharges required. This includes engineers with no tanker experience who have completed the above requirements and obtained USCG endorsement. However, the company may still require observation trips
- No Tanker Experience - 90 days onboard ship to observe 5 loads and 5 discharges
Note: Upon acceptance of employment the member will sign an employment contract directly with the company based upon the signed MOU with AMO. The agreement signed ensures the member is party to the current AMO plans and benefits. The employment contract is the international equivalent of our commonly used shipping articles. Companies may require a probationary period prior to permanent status.
