Requirements Changed For Gas Turbine Engineers
The below guidance and information are provided for engine officers who plan to sail aboard gas turbine Propulsion vessels after Feb. 1, 2002.
Recently, the U.S. Coast Guard issued NVIC 2-01, which provides information concerning the issuance of qualifications for seagoing engineers operating gas turbine propelled vessels in compliance with STCW '95. The current policies for crewing gas turbine vessels will remain effective until Feb. 1, 2002. Following that date, a specific gas turbine endorsement will be required similar to the current steam or motor endorsement. The endorsement can be acquired in the following ways:
  1. All engineers (regardless of endorsement or type of ships sailed) who began the service or training for their present licenses before Aug. 1, 19998 may request the gas turbine endorsement from a USCG Regional Exam Center (REC) after paying a user fee.
  2. Third Assistant Engineers who began qualifying service after Aug. 1 1998 must complete an approved training course.
  3. Second Assistant Engineers who began qualifying service after Aug. 1, 1998 must complete an approved training course or complete 60 days of service as a watch officer aboard such vessels.
  4. Chief and First Assistant Engineers who began qualifying service after Aug. 1, 1998 must complete an approved training course.
The endorsement will be made to both the STCW '95 certificate and the license.
AMO's RTM Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research Center in Dania Beach, Fla., is currently preparing a gas turbine training course for engineers.
It is important that all AMO Deep-Sea and Great Lakes engineers meeting Category 1 (above) proceed to their nearest USCG REC to request the endorsement.
For additional information, call RTM STAR Center at 1-800-942-3220 to speak with Clifford "Kip" Jayne at ext. 7258 or Dwight Hutchinson at ext. 7888.
