The Raymond T. McKay Simulation, Training, Assessment & Research Center has announced the following developments, enhancements and additions to training and curriculum. Many of these enhancements are based upon input and discussions from the maritime training conference held in March at RTM STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla.
Military Sealift Command training progress: Military Sealift Command has approved the teaching of their one-day Marine Environmental Programs course at RTM STAR Center. STAR Center is arranging for an instructor to attend the MSC school so the course can be made available later this year. Other MSC course requests are still pending.
Medical Person-In-Charge refresher: RTM STAR Center is developing a three-day practical skills refresher and expects to have it on the course schedule later this year. STAR Center does not expect the Coast Guard to grant approval for this course, as it is not a Coast Guard requirement.
Tug training: the smaller bridge in Dania Beach will be updated with a Z-Drive Tractor Tug capability the last week of this month. STAR Center is working with MARITRANS to model one of their Articulated Tug Barges for use in that simulator. STAR Center is also working with MARITRANS on a tug stability course.
Gas turbine training: STAR Center in Dania Beach will add an unscheduled Coast Guard approved gas turbine course to the schedule this summer to meet AMSEA training needs.
Chemical tanker safety training: STAR Center is working with US Shipping to develop a training course for chemical tankers and expects to complete course development by the early fall.
CD training: The training available on CD to students while they are at STAR Centers has been added to the Web site and will be included in the next printing of the course catalog.
Electrical, Electronics and Control Engineering course: STAR Center is completing the first run of this Coast Guard approved four-week management upgrade course. We will be reviewing student comments and make any necessary changes for future courses.
Welding training: RTM STAR Center has partnered with Owens Community College in Toledo and will offer the first two-week welding course at STAR Toledo June 12 to 23. The frequency of course offerings will be determined by student demand and instructor availability.
ABS NS5 "SafeNet" training: The next class will be conducted in Dania Beach June 20 to 22. We will schedule the frequency of future classes based on demand.
