American Maritime Officers will man the Jones Act-qualified container vessel National Glory in all licensed positions.
The 14,000 deadweight-ton ship, operated by Crowley Liner Services, will provide short sea service between the U.S. Northeast and Freeport, Texas. Crowley will operate the vessel for National Shipping of America.
AMO National President Tom Bethel praised the work of AMO members working to get the vessel ready for its domestic debut.
"Crowley reported that Captain Tim Anderson, Chief Engineer Brian Davis and First Assistant Engineer Simo Zatezalo have done outstanding work aboard the National Glory," Bethel said. "This is a new venture entrusted to the finest licensed merchant mariners in the world. Brothers Anderson, Davis and Zatezalo reflect the AMO standards of excellence and professionalism, and they bring credit to everyone in our union."
The National Glory is expected to complete sea trials soon and may sail by the end of September. The ship will perform initial service in the Far East and will probably begin operation in the domestic trades in the second quarter of 2008.
