Military Sealift Command has awarded the operating charter for the M/V Capt. Steven L. Bennett to AMO-contracted company Sealift Inc.
The charter award has a firm period of nine months and includes options to extend the charter for an additional four years and two months. The M/V Bennett, which is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers, is slated to preposition cargo for MSC.
This is the third 59-month charter Sealift Inc. has been awarded for the Bennett. The crew has been excellent and the ship has received good ratings in every MSC inspection report we've had, said Sealift Inc. management. Performance was a consideration for this charter, and the maintenance of the ship to high standards and the outstanding performance of the crew were definitely factors.
The M/V Bennett is named for Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Steven L. Bennett, who was killed in action June 29, 1972, while flying as a forward air controller in Quang Tri, Vietnam. Bennett's aircraft was hit by a surface-to-air missile while strafing a hostile target when no tactical support was available. His observer's chute was shredded by the impact of the missile and, although Capt. Bennett's chute was intact, he chose to ditch his aircraft in an attempt to save the observer. He didn't survive, but his observer made it out of the aircraft and was rescued.
Including the M/V Bennett, Sealift Inc. operates 12 ships manned in all licensed positions by AMO.
