• Accurate information leads to honest dialogue
          One way my administration promotes open communication and greater transparency in American Maritime Officers is to provide all AMO members and their families with immediate access to accurate information. When important facts are at the fingertips, and when essential data are obtained easily, rumor, misunderstanding and misinterpretation have a lot less harmful influence over the conversation.

          American Maritime Officers will man the Jones Act-qualified container vessel National Glory in all licensed positions.
  • MSC awards charter for M/V Bennett to Sealift Inc.
          Military Sealift Command has awarded the operating charter for the M/V Capt. Steven L. Bennett to AMO-contracted company Sealift Inc.
  • Dues "check-off" eliminated
          Effective December 1, 2007, AMO Dues "Check-Off" will come to an end. This step is being taken with approval of the AMO National Executive Board as a result of confusion, administrative problems and election eligibility questions. The AMO National Executive Board has taken corrective action and reached agreements with all AMO contracted companies which currently have check off to eliminate the dues check-off provisions from all such contracts.
  • AMO enters job venture with Faststream Recruitment Inc.
          American Maritime Officers and Faststream Recruitment Inc. have entered the first phase of an exclusive relationship geared toward increasing job opportunities for AMO members and expanding careers with AMO to include shore side employment after seagoing careers.
  • Schedule for upcoming AMO informational meetings
          American Maritime Officers will host additional informational area membership meetings in the ports of San Francisco/Oakland and Tacoma next month.
  • Proposed OceanWay LNG project moves ahead
          The proposed OceanWay project to transport liquefied natural gas to California took a step forward in September when the U.S. Coast Guard and the City of Los Angeles determined that the Woodside Natural Gas application for a license to operate an offshore facility met federal and state requirements to begin a full environmental assessment.
  • Giannella rescues Cuban refugees in Gulf of Mexico
          The T-5 tanker USNS Lawrence Giannella Aug. 2 rescued 13 Cuban refugees from a small craft during a rainstorm in the Gulf of Mexico. The refugees had been adrift for 13 days.
  • Construction begins on first tanker in series of nine for U.S. Shipping
          Construction on the first in a series of nine double-hulled tankers for U.S. Shipping Partners began last month at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company (NASSCO) in San Diego, Calif., launching the second phase of a building spree for the company.
