American Maritime Officers member Capt. Fred Adekunle Walley represented the U.S. merchant marine during the Time of Remembrance ceremony on the grounds of the Washington Monument May 20 in Washington, D.C.
The ceremony is dedicated to the memory of those who have died in service to their nation. The second annual Time of Remembrance was attended by more than 3,000 family members and friends of U.S. service members who lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. The event honored fallen service members who fought and died protecting the United States of America in every war dating back to 1776.
"The merchant marine has been recognized as one of the services supporting the war efforts of our nation, helping to defend our freedom and national security," Capt. Walley said. "In past wars, we have lost so many people. We have to continue to remember them."
Representatives from each branch of the armed services participated in the Time of Remembrance. Each was called on stage to salute those in attendance and to ring a replica of the Liberty Bell.
Capt. Walley, who has represented the merchant marine at both Time of Remembrance tributes, recently returned from a deployment as master of the Ready Reserve Force ship Cape Washington. During its most recent mission, the Cape Washington--which is operated by Crowley Liner Services and manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers--delivered equipment for troops in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Time of Remembrance tribute was initiated by the White House Commission on Remembrance. The commission was established by Congress in 2000 as an independent government organization to encourage Americans to honor the sacrifices of America's fallen and their families.
