Maersk Line Ltd. May 22 was awarded a five-year Military Sealift Command operating charter for two ammunition ships that will be converted for military use and delivered in February 2001. The ships will be manned in all licensed positions by AMO.
The ships will replace three lighter-aboard ships now providing the service. The current ammunition ships are not operated under AMO contract.
Maersk Line Ltd. already operates five maritime prepositioning roll-on/roll-off ships, three specialized RO/ROs, five large, medium-speed RO/ROs, and nine T-AGOS and four SWATH surveillance vessels for MSC. AMO represents the licensed officers on all of these vessels.
In addition, Maersk Line Ltd. operates four containerships in commercial foreign trade through the 10-year, $1 billion Maritime Security Program authorized in the Maritime Security Act of 1996. AMO provides the licensed officers for Maersk's MSP fleet.
