Navieras deal to result in net job gain for AMO
Purchase of rival by Sea Star will lead to new role for trailerships manned by AMO
The purchase of Navieras de Puerto Rico by Sea Star Line will result in a net gain of two ships for the AMO fleet. The Great Land (above) and the Northern Lights are operated for Totem Ocean Trailer Express (TOTE), an investor in Sea Star Line, by Interocean Ugland Management and manned in all licensed positions by AMO. As the antiquated Navieras fleet is retired in the near future, TOTE will shift two of its trailerships--current plans indicate the Great Land and Northern Lights--to the Puerto Rico Jones Act trades from the Washington to Alaska run. They will be replaced on the West Coast by two new trailerships that TOTE is currently building at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company. One of the older trailerships, probably the Westward Venture, will maintain its standby role in the Pacific Northwest.
