The passengers and crew of the MV World Discoverer, including approximately 50 American tourists, were rescued from the sea April 30 when the Liberian-flag cruise ship hit an underwater formation and ran aground 25 miles north of Honoria. American Classic Voyages (ACV) recently received loan guarantees from the Maritime Administration for the construction of two U.S.-flag cruise vessels, currently underway at Atlantic Marine Inc. in Jacksonville, Fla. A strong majority of officers and crew members in a major East Coast tug fleet voted to join American Maritime Officers. Awash in continuing criticism, the U.S.-based foreign-flag cruise industry is expected to revive a slick public relations campaign to head off possible regulatory restraint. A merger between two oil majors produced a job windfall for AMO May 3 when the tanker Prudhoe Bay joined the union's deep-sea fleet roster. With several key partnerships and agreements established, SeaAmerica Cruise Line Inc. is on course to launching its maiden voyage aboard one of two new U.S.-flag cruise ships by late 2003 or early 2004. The American merchant fleet remains essential to U.S. interests, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said April 5. AMO will continue to man eight fast sealift roll-on/roll-off ships in all licensed positions under an operating charter award announced May 2 by the Navy's Military Sealift Command. The House Oversight Panel on Merchant Marine in April authorized $50 million for the ship construction loan guarantee program in fiscal 2001. |
