'Marine Columbia' Wins Performance Award
Lone AMO Ship In Alaska Tanker Company Fleet Of 11 Ranked First In Five Categories
The MT Marine Columbia, the only ship in Alaska Tanker Company's fleet of 11 that is manned in all licensed positions by American Maritime Officers, was recently rated first by the company in five categories of performance and safety.
Alaska Tanker Company (ATC) in February announced that the Marine Columbia was the winner of the ATC President's Award for Excellence in Health, Safety and Environmental Performance for 2000.
"The MT Marine Columbia produced excellent results by achieving no lost time injuries and no spills or loss of containment for the last year," according to the company. "In addition, the vessel has gone over two years without a lost time injury or a spill to sea. The MT Marine Columbia's efforts in ATC's HSE programs and culture along with overall improvements and contributions toward a strong quality system and safety culture provide a standard that all of our vessels should strive to achieve and maintain."
The ship's performance in 2000 was ranked highest in the ATC fleet and the Marine Columbia will receive $8000 to be used for officer and crew comfort improvements as a result, according to the bulletin. The ship will receive an additional $10,000 from the company for winning the ATC HSE Excellence Award.
"The reason we were able to do this is that we had a lot of help from the permanent crew-and because of the continuity and longevity of the crew," said Jim Hirst, who has worked aboard the Marine Columbia since August 1999 and has been an AMO member for 12 years.
The ATC HSE Excellence Award was based upon the following criteria:
  • Does the recipient have excellent performance for the selected period?
  • Does the recipient have excellent overall performance within its ship specific performance contract?
  • Does the recipient provide innovative and proactive contributions to ATC's safety culture and business?
  • Does the recipient have excellent work force participation in HSE initiatives throughout the selected period?
  • Does the recipient provide leadership in excellence to sustain ATC's safety culture?
AMO members working aboard the Marine Columbia include Captains John Scoggins and Burkhard Schultz; First Officers Hirst and Borne Chambers; Second Officers Pat Thompson, Donald Lindsay and Eric Lindsay; Third Officers Gary Vargas, Dennis Flynn, Jennifer Lundy, Thomas Laird, David Dawes, Mark McLaughlin, Ken Chinn and Russ DeVaney; Chief Engineers Dan Roman and Marc Lenzi; First Assistant Engineers Charlie Benson, Kevin Thomann and Dave Ledridge; Second Assistant Engineers Keith Montpas, Ray Linis, Tom Toomey, John Jordan and Bob Bossa; and Third Assistant Engineers Chris Rowe, David LeColst, Andrew Gray, Victor Mull, Alec Nulsen, Shawn Cannon and Ted Harkins.
