The American Maritime Officers Safety & Education Plan has established a new position at RTM STAR Center -- director of AMO member training requirements and officer development. AMO member Capt. Jerry Pannell has been hired for the position at STAR Center and will report to work at the Dania Beach, Fla., facility in mid-March.
"I have felt for some time that the membership would benefit from career advice and assistance from an experienced AMO officer who fully understands the training and experience required for officers to progress from initial licenses through assignments as master or chief," said STAR Center Director of Training Capt. Phil Shullo.
Pannell's responsibilities will include working with AMO members and applicants in developing training and employment strategies based on career goals and industry demand, tracking changing regulatory requirements for licensing and documentation, and assisting AMO members in maximizing the training benefits available to them through STAR Center in Florida and Toledo, Ohio. Pannell will also assist Shullo in ensuring the training needs of AMO members and applicants are met to the greatest extent possible under the guidelines established by the Board of Trustees of the Safety & Education Plan.
Pannell graduated the State University of New York Maritime College in 1987. He joined AMO in 1988. He began work at STAR Center in 1993 as an adjunct deck instructor and was later head of the deck department at STAR Center. He ran for the office of national deep-sea vice president in the 2001 AMO election of officers and executive board members. He most recently sailed as master of the USNS Antares, operated by Maersk Line Limited under contract with AMO.
