AMO members ratify National Executive Board's acceptance of report on challenge to '06 election
American Maritime Officers members in March voted 93 to 22 during a total of three membership meetings to accept a report finding no merit in the challenge to the 2006 AMO Election of National Officers and National Executive Board Members.

The voting occurred during regularly scheduled AMO membership meetings at headquarters in Dania Beach and in the constitutional ports of Toledo and Brooklyn the week of March 5.

The appeal was filed by John Hearn, Christopher Bartlett, Tim Harkins, John Rousselle and Henry Mallon, all of whom ran unsuccessfully for office on the AMO Membership Committee (AMC) slate of candidates. The appellants challenged the conduct of the 2006 election on several counts.

A subcommittee of the AMO National Executive Board considered the appeal and investigated the specific challenges to the conduct of the election. The sub-committee consisted of three members of the AMO National Executive Board who ran unopposed in the 2006 election (Donald Cree, Edward Kelly and Donald Nilsson).

"Brother Hearn has made many allegations in his challenge, on behalf of himself and the other members of the AMC slate who were defeated. This subcommittee does not find any support for the allegations. The challenge of Brother Hearn should be denied by the AMO National Executive Board," the subcommittee concluded in its 23-page report covering the internal investigation.

The AMO National Executive Board in February voted to approve the report of the subcommittee.

During the March membership meetings, the subcommittee's report was presented to AMO members in attendance, who debated the report's findings and had the opportunity to question the appellants and members of the subcommittee.

A majority of AMO members at each meeting voted to approve the subcommittee's report. By port, the vote counts were:
  • Dania Beach: 64-15
  • Toledo: 22-1
  • Brooklyn: 7-6
The approval of the sub-committee's report by the AMO National Executive Board and by AMO members attending the meetings concluded the internal appeal of the 2006 AMO Election of National Officers and National Executive Board Members.
