RTM Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research Center now offers a five-day liquid cargo simulator course for officers preparing to work aboard liquefied natural gas tank ships.
The first session, conducted in February at STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla., was for members of American Maritime Officers with recent experience on LNG carriers. Eventually, the course will enroll officers new to the LNG trade, as well as terminal operators, said Phil Shullo, director of training for STAR Center in Dania Beach and Toledo, Ohio.
STAR Center has provided LNG training in Dania Beach for several years. Its 60-hour Tank Ship Liquefied Gases Course is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard to meet the requirements of STCW '95 and is a prerequisite for enrollment in the LNG simulator course.
STAR Center also offers a five-day Tank Ship Dangerous Liquids classroom course to meet the requirements of tankerman assistant, tankerman person-in-charge and tankerman engineer.
The U.S. tanker fleet is a logical source of officers for LNG transportation, Shullo said. STAR Center is working with the industry and with the Maritime Administration to meet the current and growing demand for U.S. merchant mariners with LNG training.
AMO is the only U.S. merchant marine officers' union with valid, recent LNG tank ship experience.
RTM STAR Center is a division of the American Maritime Officers Safety and Education Plan.
