AMO to man new car carrier built for Jones Act services
MV Jean Anne to operate between West Coast, Hawaii
American Maritime Officers will man the new car carrier MV Jean Anne, which was built to serve in the Jones Act trades between the U.S. mainland and Hawaii.
Construction of the Jean Anne for Pasha Hawaii Transportation was completed recently at the Halter Marine shipyard in Pascagoula, Miss.
Interocean Ugland Management will operate the ship for the Pasha Group, and AMO members will man the Jean Anne in all licensed positions.
The 12,500-deadweight-ton vessel will operate between San Diego and four ports in Hawaii.
"The addition of U.S.-built tonnage to the commercial U.S.-flagged fleet is an extremely positive development for the American maritime industry as a whole and, in this case, for our union in particular," said AMO National President Michael McKay. "We are proud to be a part of this important new Jones Act service, which confirms that the cabotage law works as intended. While this ship and this particular trade present new opportunities for our membership, AMO has an extensive record of success in manning pure car carriers under the U.S. flag."
The Jean Anne will be christened in San Diego on March 21.
