No dues increase in 2008
The National Executive Board of American Maritime Officers has determined that a membership dues increase will not be necessary in 2008.

The board's finding, adopted unanimously during the board's meeting on October 19, 2007, was based on a recommendation from the union's National Secretary-Treasurer, who reviews AMO's financial state annually as required by the AMO National Constitution. This year's review found that our union remains financially sound, and that its treasury and other assets are poised for continued growth.

As we mark another year of financial strength, support of the AMO Voluntary Political Action Fund remains crucial. The U.S. merchant and sealift fleets depend upon the programs, policies and appropriations voted upon by elected representatives in the Senate and House of Representatives. Our elected representatives in Congress must be informed of the U.S.-flag view on maritime policy issues, and each must be made to understand what you do as seagoing professionals and why your work is so important to this nation. The Jones Act, funding of the Maritime Security Program and defense shipping, enforcement of the U.S.-flag cargo preference laws, federal dredging operations, and many other policy and funding issues will be on the Congressional agenda. Each of these laws and programs accounts for jobs held by AMO members in all trades.

I ask that you continue to support the AMO Membership Assistance Program with voluntary, tax-deductible contributions. The fund assists AMO families who suffer loss or damage during hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. The fund to date has assisted 39 members and their families.

Meanwhile, on behalf of the entire National Executive Board, I wish you and your family a healthy, happy holiday season and a prosperous 2008.

Fraternally and sincerely,

Thomas J. Bethel
National President
