New Toledo dorm, training facility opens in January
The joint union-employer trustees of the AMO Safety and Education Plan broke ground for the new combination dormitory-training annex during a celebration at the site in June 2001. The dormitory and training programs are available year-round to AMO members in all vessel departments and in all trades who elect to train in Toledo.

The new dormitory and training facility at the Raymond T. McKay Simulation, Training, Assessment & Research Center in Toledo, Ohio, will open its doors in January, providing new lodging and classroom space for American Maritime Officers Great Lakes, deep sea and inland waters members.
Construction on the facility was completed in December and the building has been turned over to the AMO Safety and Education Plan for use by RTM STAR Center. The on-site dormitory, which features sixty spacious rooms on the upper four floors of the building, will replace the lodging facilities that RTM STAR Center had been leasing a few blocks away from the main training center.
AMO members can enroll in consecutively scheduled classes, prepare for license upgrades and plan extended stays for training at the new facility with their families.
"We encourage AMO members and their families everywhere to take advantage of the new training and lodging options in Toledo, which will be available year-round," said Harry Crooks, director of training at RTM STAR Center in Toledo.
The new facility is located across the street from the main RTM STAR Center complex and also features a swimming pool, classroom space and a machine/welding shop. Some of the course offerings planned for the new building are:
  • Officer in charge of a navigational watch (the original deck license preparation program)
  • Classroom and confined water portions of fast rescue boat and proficiency in survival craft
  • Basic safety training
Courses at the new building are scheduled to begin Jan. 5.
With on-site lodging and expanded training facilities now available, RTM STAR Center in Toledo has significantly expanded its course offerings and expects an increase in the 1,000 to 1,500 members that train there each year.
"This is going to be a superb purpose-built facility that will provide convenience, comfort and quality training," said Phil Shullo, director of training at RTM STAR Center in Dania Beach, Fla. "This is a long-awaited significant upgrade to the STAR Center living and training facility in Toledo."
