American Maritime Officers National President Michael R. McKay was elected to a third full term by wide margins over three challengers in a two-month, union-wide secret ballot vote that ended Dec. 1.
Also re-elected were Robert W. McKay as national secretary-treasurer, Edward V. Kelly as national vice president at large, and Robert J. Kiefer as national executive board member (inland waters). Thomas J. Bethel was elected to a first term as AMO national executive vice president, and Joseph Z. Gremelsbacker was elected to a first term as AMO national vice president (deep-sea). Bethel currently serves as national assistant vice president at large, and Gremelsbacker serves as national executive board member (deep-sea).
Leroy C. Tanner, a national representative of AMO, was elected to succeed Bethel as national assistant vice president at large.
In the race for national president of AMO, Michael R. McKay defeated Jerome E. Joseph, Richard P. Martucci, and Leslie C. Sang. McKay received 667 votes, while Joseph--currently the national executive vice president of AMO--received 417. Martucci received 37 votes, and Sang received 126.
For the office of national secretary-treasurer, Robert W. McKay defeated Thomas E. Kelly. McKay received 633 votes, while Kelly, now the union's national vice president (deep sea), received 611 votes.
Bethel defeated Richard (Rick) Ouellette for AMO's third-highest elective position. Bethel received 796 votes, while Ouellette received 421.
Gremelsbacker won the deep-sea vice president's post with 874 votes, compared to 358 votes for Gerard C. (Jerry) Pannell, who now serves as head of the deck department at the AMO Safety & Education Plan's RTM Simulation, Training, Assessment and Research Center in Dania Beach, Fla.
In the contest for AMO national vice president (at large), Edward V. Kelly defeated Michael F. Finnigan. Kelly received 815 votes, while Finnigan received 389 votes.
Tanner, who received 695 votes, defeated Richard (Richie) LeClaire, who received 513 votes. LeClaire now serves as an at-large member of the AMO executive board.
Kiefer was re-elected with 737 votes, compared to 449 for Timothy (Tim) Dragone, who resigned last summer as an AMO national representative.
Declared elected without opposition last July were Vahram (Gus) Guzelian, J.D. Willard, Donald Nilsson, and Paul Cates, who will serve as executive board members of AMO. Also re-elected without opposition were Dan Smith as national vice president (Great Lakes) and Donald N. Cree as national assistant vice president (Great Lakes). William S. (Stan) Barnes was elected without opposition to a first term as national executive board member (Great Lakes).
All of the elected officials will begin their five-year terms Jan. 1 2002.
"I am grateful to the deep-sea, Great Lakes, and inland waters members who supported me and the candidates seeking office with me," Michael McKay said. "Their confidence and trust were not misplaced."
McKay added: "I thank every AMO member who participated in the election, regardless of how they voted. This was an important democratic exercise consistent with our union's history and traditions. We are a lot stronger because of it."
The election results were announced at AMO headquarters in Dania Beach Dec. 5 by Impartial Administrator Henry F. Murray, First Deputy Impartial Administrator Stuart Bauchner, and a rank and file tallying committee elected Nov. 26 in special AMO membership meetings at headquarters and in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Toledo, Oh., as required in Article XI, Section 4(a) of the AMO National Constitution.
Serving on the committee were: Douglas Heller, Book #238-H; James McNamee, Book # 454-M; Harry Dennis, Book #D-208; Edward Gaskill, Book #G-293; and Mark Aiken, Book #A-165. Serving as alternates were John Hafner, Book #279-H, and Paul Garrett, Book #G-289.
The tallying committee and alternates met at headquarters Dec. 3 and elected Heller to serve as chairman. The committee and the impartial administrator then removed the ballots from the vault at the designated depository in Fort Lauderdale, sealed them in a ballot box, and returned to headquarters.
AMO members were informed at the regularly scheduled Dec. 3 headquarters membership meeting that the tallying committee was ready to begin verifying voter eligibility and counting the ballots. The membership meeting was recessed, and the ballot count was completed late in the evening Dec. 4. The regularly scheduled membership meeting reconvened at 10:00 a.m. Dec. 5 to hear the tallying committee's report, which was accepted unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 10:30.
