The USNS Sumner, a Military Sealift Command vessel (T-AGS 61) manned in all
licensed positions by American Maritime Officers, filled a crucial role in
the recent recovery and relocation of the Japanese fisheries training
vessel Ehime Maru near Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Ehime Maru sank Feb. 9 when the U.S. submarine USS Greeneville collided with it approximately nine miles south of Oahu. The Greeneville was
demonstrating an emergency surfacing maneuver for the benefit of civilian
guests during routine operations when its stern gashed the hull of the
190-foot training vessel.
