The surge in U.S.-flag shipping continued through August on the Great Lakes with an overall cargo float in excess of 12.6 million net tons, an increase of nearly 14 percent over August of last year and a 3.4 percent improvement on the five-year average for August.
As the surge in shipping on the Great Lakes continued, Maritime Administrator William Schubert discussed federal initiatives that could bring a greater role in domestic cargo transportation to the U.S.-flagged fleet on the lakes.
