Working from an office in the capitol, American Maritime Officers
works to protect the professional interests of its members by helping to
fend off persistent threats to laws and programs that sustain the U.S.-flag merchant
fleet in foreign and domestic markets, and by promoting new opportunities
for U.S.-flag cargo and cruise vessel operators. |

The most critical current maritime policy
issue is cabotage, the restriction of domestic cargo and cruise markets to
vessels owned, built, documented, and manned in the U.S. The core cabotage
laws are the Jones Act and the Passenger Vessel Services
Act. |

The Jones Act, the Passenger Vessel Services
Act and cabotage laws covering salvage, dredging and fishing services
state a sound principle and enhance U.S. security and sovereignty--at no
cost to taxpayers. Despite their conspicuous merit, these laws are
consistently targeted for roll-back or repeal on Capitol Hill. |
